Hexagram 30 of 64

The Clinging 离为火

☲☲ Fire over Fire

Clarity that clings to what is right.

In the I Ching, Hexagram 30 is light that clings to what it burns: fire needs fuel, and clarity needs something to hold to. It favors what is correct, warm and steady. The warning is about brightness that burns out through restlessness or excess. Choose carefully what you cling to.

Judgment

It is favorable to persevere. Success. Keeping a cow brings good fortune.

Image

Brightness doubled: the clinging, fire. The great person carries the light on and shines it across the four quarters.

The six lines

Read from the bottom line (the beginning) to the top line (the outcome). Each line gives the classical text, our English translation, and a plain-language reading.

Treading in confusion. Take it seriously, and there is no blame.

You are stepping into a tangled situation. Careful attention avoids trouble.

    Yellow light. Sublime good fortune.

Clarity held at the center, with humility, brings excellent results.

Light at sunset. If one does not beat the pot and sing, the lament of old age follows. Misfortune.

When your light is fading, refusing to enjoy the time you have only leads to regret. Use the time you have.

It comes suddenly, burning, dying, abandoned.

An abrupt turn brings loss or upheaval. Accept the change rather than clinging to what has gone.

Tears flow freely, with sorrow and sighs. Good fortune.

Grief, allowed to run its course, can clear the heart. Letting yourself feel it leads to a better outcome.

The king sends out troops. They capture the leader, not the followers. No blame.

When firm action is needed, target the real cause rather than everyone involved. Then there is no blame.

In practice

Love and relationships

Warmth and attention matter here, but be careful not to cling so tightly that the other person feels smothered. Shared light lasts longer than a flame that burns one person.

Work and decisions

A period of visibility and recognition, good for presenting your work. Protect your energy so that brightness does not turn into burnout.

Money

Be aware of attachment to one asset or one outcome. Keep perspective, and an exit plan.
