Hexagram 12 of 64
Standstill 天地否
☰☷ Heaven over Earth
Blockage: withdraw and keep still.
In the I Ching, Hexagram 12 is a stall: heaven and earth are not connecting, and things do not flow. The wise withdraw to keep their integrity. It is not a permanent verdict. The text notes that stagnation cannot last forever, and the turn often comes when people hold steady rather than force a change.
Judgment
Not the right kind of people. It is unfavorable for the noble person to persevere; what goes out is great and what comes in is small.
Image
Heaven and earth do not join: standstill. The noble person keeps to thrift and virtue to avoid danger, and does not seek honor or reward.
The six lines
Read from the bottom line (the beginning) to the top line (the outcome). Each line gives the classical text, our English translation, and a plain-language reading.
Pulling up reeds, their roots come up together. Steady perseverance brings good fortune and success.
People bound by shared principles can move together. Working with them eases the stall.
Going along with things brings petty people good fortune. The great person refuses to go along, and that brings success.
Going along pays off in the short term, but a person of integrity should not give up principle to keep the peace.
Enduring shame.
Trying to hide a weakness or to endure humiliation quietly costs you. Be honest about what is not working.
A mandate arrives. No blame; those who share the work share its blessing.
When a clear mandate comes, act on it. It brings benefit to your companions as well as to you.
The standstill ends, and the noble person finds good fortune. Keep saying that it may be lost, that it may be lost — and then it is bound fast to a clump of mulberry.
Relief comes, but only with vigilance. Name the risk out loud, and secure what you have built while you can.
The standstill is overturned. First blocked, then joy.
The stall ends in an upset. Relief follows the difficulty.
In practice
Love and relationships
Communication has stalled. Pause the blame, and name what each of you can do differently. A calm, neutral conversation may open the flow again.
Work and decisions
A team or plan that has frozen. Step back from the pressure, protect your integrity, and wait for a clear mandate before committing your name.
Money
Avoid chasing returns in a stalled market. Protect savings, keep costs flexible, and look for a clear signal before you act.
How to use this reading
Name what is blocked, and one thing within your control that keeps your integrity intact.
