Hexagram 14 of 64

Possession in Great Measure

☲☰ Fire over Heaven

Abundance and using it well.

Hexagram 14 describes abundance already gathered: resources, recognition or capacity in your hands. Its question is not how to get more but how to distribute and sustain what is there without display. It is a favourable moment with one condition: that the use is proportionate.

Judgment

Sublime success.

Fire above heaven: possession in great measure. The noble person curbs what is wrong, promotes what is good, and follows heaven's blessing.

The six lines

Read from the bottom line (the beginning) to the top line (the outcome). Each line gives the classical text, our English translation, and a plain-language reading.

Before harm arises, there is no blame; if the difficulty is acknowledged, no blame.

Nothing has gone wrong yet. Naming what could go wrong in advance already protects you.

A great cart is loaded and there is somewhere to go. No blame.

You have capacity to carry more. Put it to work on something concrete.

A prince offers his abundance to the Son of Heaven; a petty person is not able to do so.

Sharing what you have with the right quarter is what distinguishes someone who can hold abundance.

One does not display one's own greatness. No blame.

Make no noise about what you have. Discretion avoids wear.

Sincerity meets sincerity, with quiet dignity. Good fortune.

Trust is earned by being frank and firm at once, without harshness.

Heaven sustains it: good fortune, and nothing that is not favourable.

Support arrives because the use was right. Close by giving thanks, without adding new demands.

In practice

Love and relationships

Affection is available; do not turn it into a ledger of favours. Show it without needing a display.

Work and decisions

You are in a position with resources. Share the credit and document decisions so others can continue the work.

Money

Before expanding, check that what you already have is well managed. Display is the most expensive line item here.

How to use this reading

Use it when something already works and the decision is how to share, protect or sustain it. The useful question is: which part of this abundance should I give away, and which should I keep?
