Hexagram 8 of 64
Holding Together 水地比
☵☷ Water over Earth
Alliance and union.
In the I Ching, Hexagram 8 is holding together: water flows over the earth and reaches every hollow, joining with it. Its meaning is union built on sincerity, not force. The judgment asks you to examine the bonds you choose and warns against joining late or half-heartedly. Good alliances are chosen, not forced.
Judgment
Good fortune. Seek the answer with a lasting, steady heart, and there is no blame. Those who hang back and arrive late meet misfortune.

Water upon the earth: holding together. The early kings founded many states and drew close to their lords.
The six lines
Read from the bottom line (the beginning) to the top line (the outcome). Each line gives the classical text, our English translation, and a plain-language reading.
Be sincere when joining others, and no blame follows. Sincerity as full as a jar: in the end something unexpected arrives, and it is good fortune.
Joining others with honesty is a sound start. Trust grows out of small, sincere acts.
Joining from within, from your own center. Steady perseverance brings good fortune.
Choose bonds that come from your own values, not from pressure. Staying true to yourself keeps a relationship strong.
Joining the wrong people.
Be careful about who you align with. Close ties to unreliable people can pull you off course.
Joining from outside, with an upright heart. Steady perseverance brings good fortune.
Building ties beyond your immediate circle, with sound judgment, can bring useful support.
Joining openly, in full view. The king hunts by driving game from three sides and lets the animal in front escape; the townspeople need no warning. Good fortune.
Being open and transparent about your commitments earns trust. You do not need to chase every chance to win loyalty.
Joining without a head, without a clear leader. Misfortune.
A group or relationship with no clear direction tends to fall apart. Define your purpose or step back.
In practice
Love and relationships
Look for a bond that feels chosen and honest, not one driven by pressure or by fear of being alone. Consistency and openness say more than grand gestures.
Work and decisions
Choose partners and teams with care, and commit fully once you join. A group without a shared direction tends to fracture, so clarify roles and goals early.
Money
Partnerships and shared investments work best when terms are written down and everyone is candid about their part. Be cautious about an arrangement that someone is rushing you to join.
How to use this reading
Use this reading when you are deciding whether to join a group, partnership, or alliance, and ask: is this a bond I choose with open eyes?
