Hexagram 9 of 64

The Taming Power of the Small

☴☰ Wind over Heaven

Small restraint, slow gathering.

In the I Ching, Hexagram 9 is the taming power of the small: dense clouds gather, but the rain has not fallen yet. It describes a time of gradual accumulation, when small steps build up before a larger result appears. The lesson is to restrain and gently guide what you have, and to notice when further pushing would backfire.

Judgment

Success. Thick clouds gather over the western outskirts, but the rain has not yet fallen.

Wind moves across the sky: the taming power of the small. The noble person refines their writing and their virtue.

The six lines

Read from the bottom line (the beginning) to the top line (the outcome). Each line gives the classical text, our English translation, and a plain-language reading.

Returning along your own path. How could there be blame? Good fortune.

If you need to change course, go back to what you already know. A small, honest correction does little harm.

Drawn back by others, you return. Good fortune.

Accepting a gentle nudge from people you trust can keep you on track.

The strap binding the cart's axle slips loose, and husband and wife turn against each other.

A small broken part can create big tension. Fix the weak point early, before it strains a close relationship.

With sincerity, the danger leaves and fear departs. No blame.

When you act honestly, the tension that was holding you back begins to ease.

Sincere and bound together, you share your wealth with your neighbors.

Sharing what you have with those close to you strengthens the bond. Generosity works best when it is sincere.

Rain has fallen and the clouds have settled. One can still carry what has been gained, but a wife's constancy is at risk. The moon is nearly full; if the noble person presses on, misfortune follows.

When a goal is almost complete, it is tempting to push too far. Stop while things are still in balance.

In practice

Love and relationships

Some situations move slowly, and this hexagram asks for patience. Avoid pressing for quick answers, and let small, sincere gestures carry the connection forward.

Work and decisions

Progress may be gradual, with many small steps adding up before a visible result. Keep track of incremental wins, and watch for the point where extra pressure starts to backfire.

Money

Saving steadily, or building a fund in small amounts, is the spirit of this hexagram. Avoid large, sudden moves; accumulate slowly and review as you go.
