Hexagram 19 of 64

Approach

☷☱ Earth over Lake

Approaching, growing in strength.

Hexagram 19 describes an approach that grows: the earth above the lake moves toward others with understanding. It encourages you to treat people with sincerity and to lead by listening. The text also names a time limit: a good approach does not last forever, so plan for what comes next.

Judgment

Sublime success through perseverance. By the eighth month there will be misfortune.

Image

A lake above the earth: approach. The noble person teaches without limit and cares for the people without bounds.

The six lines

Read from the bottom line (the beginning) to the top line (the outcome). Each line gives the classical text, our English translation, and a plain-language reading.

Approaching with mutual feeling. Perseverance brings good fortune.

Coming near others with sincerity and understanding brings good fortune.

Approaching with mutual feeling. Good fortune, and nothing unfavorable.

A close connection keeps paying off as long as sincerity guides it.

Approaching with sweet words brings nothing favorable. Once one is aware of this, there is no blame.

Overly flattering treatment does not serve you. If you notice it and correct course, no reproach follows.

Approaching with full devotion. No blame.

Being present and direct with those who depend on you avoids reproach.

Approaching with wisdom, as fits a great ruler. Good fortune.

Leading by listening and understanding, rather than by control, brings good fortune.

Approaching with sincere generosity. Good fortune, and no blame.

Steady, generous care for others is a path toward good fortune.

In practice

Love and relationships

Approach with genuine attention and without empty praise. Talking about what you both feel does more than pretty phrases.

Work and decisions

Listen to your team and show real interest in their work. Think ahead about how the project will hold up once the first momentum fades.

Money

Trust the people you deal with, but get agreed terms in writing. Let clear conditions, not friendliness alone, guide the deal.

How to use this reading

Use this reading when you want to move closer to someone, a group, or an opportunity. Ask: how can I support others without losing my judgment, and what happens when the first stage ends?
