Hexagram 20 of 64

Contemplation 风地观

☴☷ Wind over Earth

Observing and reflecting.

Hexagram 20 is about contemplation: wind moving over the earth, letting the landscape be seen. It invites you to observe carefully and respectfully before you act, to watch how people live, and to reflect on your own conduct. What holds this view together is sincerity, not the rush to judge.

Judgment

After the ablution and before the offering, the watchers are full of sincere, solemn awe.

Wind moves over the earth: contemplation. The early kings toured the regions and watched the people in order to teach them.

The six lines

Read from the bottom line (the beginning) to the top line (the outcome). Each line gives the classical text, our English translation, and a plain-language reading.

Observing like a child. For the small person, no blame; for the noble person, regret.

A narrow view is normal at the start, but anyone with responsibility should widen their perspective.

Peeking through a narrow gap. Perseverance is favorable, as it is for a woman who stays within her own sphere.

A partial view is limited. Stay within your own sphere and keep your steadiness.

Observing my own life, I decide whether to advance or withdraw.

Look honestly at your situation to decide whether to move forward or pull back.

Observing the light of the kingdom. It is favorable to serve as a guest of the ruler.

Learning from respected people and good examples helps you find your right place.

Observing my own life. The noble person is free of blame.

Reflecting on your own conduct keeps you free of blame.

Observing the lives of others. The noble person is free of blame.

Studying how others live and act can guide your path without reproach.

In practice

Love and relationships

Watch how your partner acts and how you feel, without drawing hasty conclusions. Speak from reflection rather than reaction.

Work and decisions

Before changing a process, observe how the work is really done and learn from good examples. Review your own way of acting too.

Money

Study several options and look at how they have worked for others before committing money. Read the figures calmly.

How to use this reading

Use this reading when you need some distance to see a situation clearly. Ask: what do I actually see when I slow down, and what does it say about my own conduct?
