Hexagram 24 of 64
Return
☷☳ Earth over Thunder
Return and a new beginning.
Hexagram 24 is about return. Its image is thunder sleeping under the earth, the first stirring of something new after a long rest. It says that coming back to what is right is always possible, and that it works best when you do it early and without fuss. It fits a moment when you are restarting a habit, a project or a relationship after a setback.
Judgment
Success. Coming and going without harm; friends arrive without blame. The way turns back, and on the seventh day it returns. It is favorable to go forward.
Image
Thunder within the earth: return. At the solstice the early kings closed the gates; merchants did not travel and rulers did not tour the regions.
The six lines
Read from the bottom line (the beginning) to the top line (the outcome). Each line gives the classical text, our English translation, and a plain-language reading.
Returning before going far. No need for remorse. Great good fortune.
If you notice a mistake early and turn back quickly, the cost stays small.
Returning through rest and ease. Good fortune.
Coming back to your center with calm and self-care tends to bring good results.
Returning again and again. Danger, but no blame.
If you keep falling back into the same pattern, be careful. Trying again is not a fault in itself.
Returning alone, in the midst of the road.
You may need to correct course before others follow. Hold your direction steadily.
Returning with sincere devotion. No regret.
A steady, honest return to what matters brings peace without regret.
Returning in confusion. Misfortune and calamity. If armies are sent out in this state, in the end there is a great defeat, and the ruler suffers. Even after ten years, the damage cannot be set right.
If you keep pushing in the wrong direction and refuse to turn back, the cost can be high and last a long time. Stop and reconsider before going further.
In practice
Love and relationships
A reconciliation or a renewed connection is best approached gently and early. Small, honest steps back toward each other usually count for more than one big gesture.
Work and decisions
A project that has drifted off course can often be brought back by returning to its original purpose. Catch small errors early rather than waiting for a large correction.
Money
Returning to a budget or plan after overspending is a sound move, and the sooner you do it, the less it costs. Avoid chasing losses; go back to the basics and move in measured steps.
How to use this reading
Use this reading when you are considering returning to a path, habit or relationship you left, and ask: what is the first small step back?
