Hexagram 26 of 64

The Taming Power of the Great 山天大畜

☶☰ Mountain over Heaven

Storing up strength.

Hexagram 26 is about gathering strength and knowledge before spending them. Like a loaded cart waiting for the road, the energy is stored rather than spent. It favours study, reserves and discipline, and warns that releasing the load too early wastes it.

Judgment

It is favorable to persevere. Not eating only at home brings good fortune; it is favorable to cross the great waters.

Image

Heaven within the mountain: the taming power of the great. The noble person studies the words and deeds of the past to build character.

The six lines

Read from the bottom line (the beginning) to the top line (the outcome). Each line gives the classical text, our English translation, and a plain-language reading.

There is danger; it is favourable to stop.

Going now would be expensive. Stopping is not lost time; it is avoiding damage.

The cart releases its axle block.

Forward motion stops for a technical reason, not for lack of will. Fix the mechanism.

Good horses pursue; it is favourable to persevere through difficulty. Train the cart and the guard: it is favourable to go somewhere.

There is drive and capacity, but only prior training keeps the advance from breaking apart.

The young bull receives its yoke-bar. Supreme good fortune.

Correcting habits while they are small costs little and pays a lot.

The tusks of the boar. Good fortune.

Strong things are tamed at the right point, not by force.

The highway of heaven opens. Success.

When the accumulation is complete, the way opens without forcing.

In practice

Love and relationships

Do not push for a definition too early. Get to know the person and build trust; the important conversation lands better prepared.

Work and decisions

A good moment to train, document your work and prepare the next step. Do not present the idea before you have evidence.

Money

Strengthen savings and your buffer before taking on new commitments.

How to use this reading

Use it when you are torn between launching and preparing more. The useful question is: what do I still need to gather so the next step does not break me?
