Hexagram 3 of 64
Difficulty at the Beginning
☵☳ Water over Thunder
Early struggle, first foundations.
In the I Ching, Hexagram 3 describes the tangled start of anything new. Energy is stirring, but the path is not clear yet. It advises patience and the right helpers rather than rushing ahead. It fits a new job, relationship or project that feels knotted and uncertain.
Judgment
Sublime success through perseverance. Do not set out yet; it is favorable to appoint helpers.
Image
Clouds and thunder: difficulty at the beginning. The noble person sorts out the tangled threads.
The six lines
Read from the bottom line (the beginning) to the top line (the outcome). Each line gives the classical text, our English translation, and a plain-language reading.
Lingering and hesitant. It is favorable to stay steady and to establish trusted allies.
Take time to find your footing. Principled beginnings, built with trusted people, hold up best.
Hesitating and turning back, a horse circling in place. Those who approach are not raiders but suitors. Holding firm, one does not yet accept; after ten years, one finally agrees.
A proposal, or any serious commitment, deserves careful testing. The answer can take far longer than you would like.
Chasing a deer without a guide, you enter the forest. The noble person sees the danger and lets go; going on brings distress.
Pursuing something without the right guide or information leads into a maze. Stopping now is the wiser choice.
Hesitating on horseback, you seek a partner. Going forward brings good fortune and nothing unfavorable.
Once you find the right help, moving forward becomes favorable.
Stored fat is hard to spend. Small acts of steadiness bring good fortune; grand ones bring misfortune.
Resources are tight. Keep your commitments modest for now; overreaching at this stage is risky.
Horses pacing in place, and tears of blood flowing.
A stalled situation can cause deep strain. Ask for help before you exhaust yourself.
In practice
Love and relationships
A new connection can feel tangled or unclear. Give it time to show its direction, and avoid pushing for a commitment before both people are ready.
Work and decisions
A new role, or a project with an unclear scope, needs careful groundwork: decide who helps, what is in scope, and what the first milestone is.
Money
Early-stage money decisions are easy to rush. Hold off on large commitments until the structure is clearer. Small, reversible steps are the better start.
How to use this reading
