Hexagram 4 of 64
Youthful Folly
☶☵ Mountain over Water
Learning and humble inquiry.
In the I Ching, Hexagram 4 is youthful folly: the mind that does not yet know and must learn. Its image is a spring at the foot of a mountain, clear but still unformed. The judgment asks for humble, sincere inquiry and firm but fair guidance. It warns that the same question asked again and again, without new thought, will not get a new answer.
Judgment
Success. The learner seeks the teacher, not the other way round. An honest first question gets an answer; asked over and over, it gets none. Steady perseverance is favorable.
Image
A spring rises at the foot of the mountain: youthful folly. The noble person acts with resolve and nurtures character.
The six lines
Read from the bottom line (the beginning) to the top line (the outcome). Each line gives the classical text, our English translation, and a plain-language reading.
Opening up the untrained mind. Firm rules help remove the shackles; but pressing on with harshness alone brings regret.
Start with clear rules and a gentle structure. Strictness alone tends to make a learner resist rather than grow.
Bearing patiently with the untrained brings good fortune. Accepting a family responsibility brings good fortune, and a capable son can manage the household.
Patience with someone who is still learning, and taking on a real responsibility, both serve you well now.
Do not chase whatever dazzles you, like a person who loses themselves at the sight of gold. Nothing favorable comes of it.
Being dazzled by status or money can cloud your judgment. Pause before committing to anything that shines too brightly.
Trapped in ignorance. Going on this way brings regret.
If you feel stuck in confusion, look for a better teacher or a more reliable source. Staying silent in doubt only deepens the regret.
A childlike, unspoiled mind. Good fortune.
Approach things with curiosity and humility. Asking simple questions without pride is a strength right now.
Strike at folly, but not as a bandit would. It is better to defend against robbers than to become one.
When you correct others, aim to protect and guide, not to dominate or take advantage. Firm boundaries keep everyone safe.
In practice
Love and relationships
In a relationship, one of you may still be learning how to express what you need. Be patient, ask questions openly, and avoid pressing for answers that neither of you is ready to give.
Work and decisions
If you are new to a role or a skill, find a trusted teacher and ask focused questions. Set clear rules for the learning process, and take feedback as information rather than as an attack.
Money
Learn the basics before committing money. Read the terms, ask someone experienced, and avoid decisions made in a hurry or based on a single source.
How to use this reading
Use this reading when you are a beginner facing a new subject or choice, and ask: what do I still need to learn before I decide?
New to the method? Start with the six-line basics.
