Hexagram 5 of 64

Waiting 水天需

☵☰ Water over Heaven

Waiting for the right moment.

In the I Ching, Hexagram 5 is the art of waiting well. Clouds gather in the sky, and rain comes in its own time. It advises preparation, sincerity and nourishment while you wait, and warns against forcing the outcome. It fits a decision whose time has not yet arrived.

Judgment

Sincerity brings light and success; steady perseverance brings good fortune. It is favorable to cross the great waters.

Clouds rise into the sky: waiting. The noble person eats, drinks and enjoys life while the time ripens.

The six lines

Read from the bottom line (the beginning) to the top line (the outcome). Each line gives the classical text, our English translation, and a plain-language reading.

Waiting in the outskirts. A steady routine is favorable; no blame.

You are still far from the center of the matter. Keep a steady routine instead of fretting.

Waiting on the sand, with some talk. In the end, good fortune.

Expect some friction or gossip while you wait. It fades if you hold your course.

Waiting in the mud, and trouble comes to you.

Waiting in an exposed place invites trouble. Move to firmer ground, or prepare your defenses.

Waiting in blood, then coming out of the cave.

Danger is close. Stay calm, withdraw to a safer place, and avoid fighting over it.

Waiting over food and drink. Steady perseverance brings good fortune.

A time of comfort and shared meals. Enjoy it with others, and keep your integrity.

Entering the cave, three uninvited guests arrive. Treat them with respect, and in the end, good fortune.

Unexpected visitors or surprises arrive. Meet them with respect, and the outcome can still be good.

In practice

Love and relationships

You may be waiting for a clear signal from a partner, or for a relationship to define itself. Sincerity matters more than timing. Let the other person set their pace, and avoid pressing for answers.

Work and decisions

A decision that waits on data, approval or a shift in the market. Use the wait to prepare the groundwork, and keep your network warm.

Money

Wait for a sensible entry point. Prepare your funds and plan first, and avoid chasing a price that has already moved.

How to use this reading
