Hexagram 35 of 64

Progress

☲☷ Fire over Earth

Rising into the light.

Hexagram 35 is about rising into view. A capable person is recognized and trusted, and the daylight carries the work forward. It favors visible, steady progress, but the rise comes in steps and brings tests along the way. Use it to think about advancing with a clear sense of who backs you and where your limits are.

Judgment

A lord is rewarded with many horses and is received three times in one day.

The sun rises over the earth: progress. The noble person lets their own bright virtue shine.

The six lines

Read from the bottom line (the beginning) to the top line (the outcome). Each line gives the classical text, our English translation, and a plain-language reading.

Advancing, then held back. Steady perseverance brings good fortune. If others do not yet trust you, stay patient and unhurried, and you are free of blame.

You are starting to move forward, but people do not know you yet. Build trust slowly rather than forcing the pace.

Advancing, yet anxious. Steady perseverance brings good fortune. You receive this great blessing from the royal grandmother.

Progress comes with some worry, but the support you need can come through trusted people. Steady effort will be rewarded.

The multitude is in agreement, and regret disappears.

When the people around you agree with your direction, doubts fade. Use that backing to move ahead.

Advancing like a gnawing rat. Steady perseverance brings danger.

Trying to do a little of everything can leave you skilled at nothing. Focus your effort on one clear path.

Regret disappears. Do not worry over the gain or loss of a single arrow. Going forward brings good fortune and nothing unfavorable.

Do not freeze over every result. A steady step forward is favorable now.

Advancing with the horns. Such force is only fit for punishing one's own town. Danger: it may end well and without blame, but persistence brings distress.

Pushing too hard, especially against people close to you, may win a point but cost you trust. Aim firmness at problems, not at people.

In practice

Love and relationships

Affection can grow in an open, visible way. Let the relationship move forward in steps that both people can see, and avoid pressing for quick commitments or displays before both are ready.

Work and decisions

Your work may be gaining recognition. Ask for the feedback and support you need, and move up step by step. Forcing a change of rank or overpowering colleagues tends to backfire.

Money

Income or opportunity may be rising. Grow what you have steadily, and treat sudden large gains with care until they are secure.

How to use this reading

Use this reading when you are asking about recognition, a promotion, or a step forward, and ask: what support is already available to me, and what is the next visible step?
