Darkening of the Light 地火明夷
☷☲ Earth over Fire
Hidden light, steady integrity.
In the I Ching, Hexagram 36 describes a time when the light has gone under the earth, and open speech is unwise. The advice is to keep your inner clarity while outwardly yielding, and to endure with integrity until the light returns. It favors patience and discretion over display.
Judgment
利艰贞。
It is favorable to persevere through hardship.

明入地中，明夷；君子以莅众，用晦而明。
Light enters the earth: darkening of the light. The noble person governs the crowd and uses concealment to bring out clarity.
The six lines
Read from the bottom line (the beginning) to the top line (the outcome). Each line gives the classical text, our English translation, and a plain-language reading.
初九：明夷于飞，垂其翼。君子于行，三日不食，有攸往，主人有言。
A bird of light flies low, its wings drooping. The noble person on a journey goes three days without food, and wherever they go, the hosts speak against them.
Hard times make the road tough. Travel light, keep your needs modest, and expect criticism or gossip.
六二：明夷，夷于左股，用拯马壮，吉。
The light is hurt in the left thigh. Rescue it with a strong horse. Good fortune.
You are injured but not immobile. A strong ally and steady support can bring recovery.
九三：明夷于南狩，得其大首，不可疾贞。
The light goes hunting in the south and takes the great leader. But do not rush to fixed conclusions.
Action in dark times can achieve something important, but do not harden your position too quickly.
六四：入于左腹，获明夷之心，于出门庭。
Entering the left side of the belly, gaining the heart of the matter, then leaving the courtyard.
You go into the core of the matter, take what you need, and step away quietly.
六五：箕子之明夷，利贞。
The darkening of the light, as with Jizi. It is favorable to persevere.
Like the minister Jizi, who hid his wisdom under a tyrant to survive, stay steady when open display is dangerous.
上六：不明晦，初登于天，后入于地。
Not bright but dark. At first climbing to heaven, later falling into the earth.
A period of obscurity and false height, then a fall. Watch for overreach.

Love and relationships
A quieter season. Keep your warmth, but share less while trust is rebuilding. Clarity returns more easily when you are not defending yourself in public.
Work and decisions
Protect your ideas, build allies quietly, and avoid public battles you cannot yet win.
Money
Hold back on bold moves, keep reserves, and avoid publicizing financial plans before they are solid.
