Hexagram 46 of 64

Pushing Upward 地风升

☷☴ Earth over Wind

Steady ascent.

Hexagram 46 is about steady rising. Its image is wood growing within the earth: a tree that climbs one step at a time. Progress comes from gentle, continuous effort rather than sudden force. With the right support, a steady climb toward a goal is possible.

Judgment

Sublime success. It is favorable to meet a great person; do not worry; a southward march brings good fortune.

Image

Wood grows within the earth: pushing upward. The noble person cultivates virtue and piles up small things until they become great.

The six lines

Read from the bottom line (the beginning) to the top line (the outcome). Each line gives the classical text, our English translation, and a plain-language reading.

Rising in agreement with those above. Great good fortune.

When the people around you support your advance, the early steps go well.

With sincerity, even a simple offering is suitable. No blame.

Modest, sincere effort is enough for now. Nothing has to be grand to be worthwhile.

    Rising into an empty town.

An opening may exist where few have gone yet. Enter with care, since open ground still needs building.

The king makes offerings on Mount Qi. Good fortune, no blame.

Honor the foundations and traditions that support you. Respect for what came before helps you move forward.

Steadfast perseverance brings good fortune. Rising by steps.

Stay steady and advance one step at a time. A well-built staircase is safer than a leap.

Rising blindly into the dark. It is favorable to persevere without rest.

If you climb without seeing where you are going, slow down. Constant, careful effort serves you better than hurrying.

In practice

Love and relationships

Growth in a relationship tends to come in small, steady steps rather than leaps. Support each other's gradual progress and avoid pushing for big changes too quickly.

Work and decisions

Progress in a role or career usually comes from steady, reliable effort. Build your skills and track record one step at a time, and ask for guidance from people who have walked the path before you.

Money

Saving and investing steadily fits this reading better than dramatic moves. Build reserves gradually and review your plan from time to time.
