Hexagram 51 of 64
The Arousing
☳☳ Thunder over Thunder
Shock that calls for alertness.
Hexagram 51 is about shock and the alertness it brings. Its image is thunder repeated, one peal after another. The first jolt may cause fear, but it is followed by laughter and steadier ground. It suggests staying calm, responding quickly, and keeping your footing when events shake you.
Judgment
Success. When the thunder comes, there is fear; then laughter and chatter. The thunder shakes a hundred miles, yet the sacrificial ladle and wine are not lost.
Image
Thunder upon thunder: the arousing. The noble person meets fear with self-examination and reflection.
The six lines
Read from the bottom line (the beginning) to the top line (the outcome). Each line gives the classical text, our English translation, and a plain-language reading.
When the thunder comes there is fear; afterward, laughter and chatter. Good fortune.
A sudden shock may frighten you at first. If you stay steady, you will recover and find your footing again.
The thunder comes with danger. Valuables are lost, so climb to the high hills. Do not chase them; in seven days they will be found.
A setback may cost you something. Do not chase what was lost in a panic; find safe ground and give it time.
The thunder shakes and stirs. If you move through it, there is no calamity.
Feeling unsettled is uncomfortable, but if you keep moving carefully, you avoid serious harm.
The thunder sinks into the mud.
A shock can leave you stalled in confusion. Wait for the ground to settle before acting.
The thunder comes and goes with danger. Nothing is lost, yet there is work to do.
The unrest comes and goes. You may lose little, but there is real work to handle.
The thunder trembles, eyes darting in fear. Advancing brings misfortune. If the shock strikes a neighbor rather than yourself, there is no blame. Talk may arise among relatives.
Anxiety can push you to act rashly, so hold back. Stay out of other people's disputes, and expect some talk around you.
In practice
Love and relationships
Tension in a relationship can arrive suddenly. Pause before reacting, and talk once the first shock has passed rather than in the heat of the moment.
Work and decisions
A sudden change or pressure at work calls for calm, quick, and clear responses. Write down what happened and the next step before you act.
Money
A surprise expense is a reason to slow down, not to spend out of panic. Set aside time to review your options before you respond.
How to use this reading
Use this reading when something unexpected has just happened and you need to decide how to respond. Ask: what is the calm next step, and what can I let pass?
