Hexagram 57 of 64

The Gentle

☴☴ Wind over Wind

Gentle penetration; persistent softness.

In the I Ching, Hexagram 57 is gentle penetration: a soft, persistent influence that reaches places force cannot. Wind enters everywhere. It favors steady persuasion and consistent small steps. Its warning is that gentleness becomes indecision if it never commits to a direction.

Judgment

Small success. It is favorable to go somewhere and favorable to meet a great person.

Wind follows wind: the gentle. The noble person issues commands and carries out affairs.

The six lines

Read from the bottom line (the beginning) to the top line (the outcome). Each line gives the classical text, our English translation, and a plain-language reading.

Advancing and retreating. It is favorable to hold to a warrior's resolve.

When you keep hesitating, a firm resolve, not endless back-and-forth, serves you best.

Wind beneath the couch. Scribes and diviners attend to their duties with great care. Good fortune, and no blame.

Humility and careful attention to small, proper details bring good fortune.

Yielding again and again brings distress.

Repeated yielding without commitment leads to embarrassment. Decide and act.

Regret fades, and three kinds of game are taken in the field.

A steady, gentle approach removes regret and can yield several results at once.

Steady perseverance brings good fortune, and regret fades. Nothing is unfavorable. A poor beginning and a good end: three days before the turning point and three days after. Good fortune.

Careful timing around a turning point brings good results, even when the start was rough.

Wind beneath the couch. The ax and the tools are lost. Steady perseverance brings misfortune.

Yielding so far that you lose your tools, your means to act, leads to misfortune. Keep your means of action.

In practice

Love and relationships

A gentle, consistent approach. Small, reliable gestures do more than grand ones. Avoid endless hedging about commitment, and say clearly what you want.

Work and decisions

Influence through patience and steady follow-through. Change often comes from repeated, gentle pressure rather than one big push.

Money

Regular, modest investing rather than one large bet. Avoid dithering: set a schedule and keep to it.
