The Wanderer

☲☶ Fire over Mountain

The traveler: careful and modest.

The Wanderer describes a traveler away from home, careful and modest in an unfamiliar place. It is a time to be courteous, keep your belongings close, and avoid getting drawn into small disputes. Success comes through steadiness and humility rather than display.

Fire on the mountain: the wanderer. The noble person applies penalties with clarity and care, and does not drag out cases.

The six lines

Read from the bottom line (the beginning) to the top line (the outcome). Each line gives the classical text, our English translation, and a plain-language reading.

A traveler fusses over petty matters, and this brings disaster upon oneself.

Getting caught in small arguments or fine details while you are away can create problems you did not need. Let minor things go.

The traveler reaches a lodging, keeps their belongings close, and gains a loyal attendant. Steady perseverance pays off.

A stable base and trusted helpers make a journey easier. Settle in and value the people who support you.

The traveler burns the lodging and loses the loyal attendant. Persisting in this way is dangerous.

Losing your base or your trusted people is a warning sign. Stop and reassess before you continue the same way.

The traveler finds a place to rest and gains some funds and tools, yet the heart is not at ease.

You have some stability and resources, but you still feel unsettled. Pay attention to that feeling and check what is missing.

You shoot a pheasant and lose one arrow, but in the end you receive praise and an appointment.

A small loss along the way need not undo the result. Keep your aim steady, and recognition may still follow.

The bird's nest burns. The traveler laughs first, then wails. Losing the ox in an easy place through carelessness brings misfortune.

Overconfidence at the start, or carelessness with what protects you, can turn joy into loss. Guard what you have.

In practice

Love and relationships

When you are between places in love, or still getting to know someone, be modest and courteous. Avoid petty arguments, which can outweigh the good in a new connection.

Work and decisions

An assignment away from home, a new site, or a short-term role calls for tact. Keep your tools in order, respect the local team, and avoid unnecessary conflict.

Money

Travel costs and temporary arrangements add up quickly. Keep track of what you spend and carry, and guard against careless losses.
