Hexagram 60 of 64
Limitation
☵☱ Water over Lake
Restraint with measure.
Limitation is about finding the right measure of restraint. Water above a lake shows a vessel that holds water within its proper bounds. Restraint helps when it is sensible and comfortable, but harsh, endless self-denial does not serve anyone. Ask which limits support you and which have become a burden.
Judgment
Success. Bitter restraint cannot be held to forever.

The six lines
Read from the bottom line (the beginning) to the top line (the outcome). Each line gives the classical text, our English translation, and a plain-language reading.
You do not step out beyond the door or the courtyard. No blame.
Staying close to home and waiting for the right moment is a sound choice for now.
You do not go out even through the gate. Misfortune.
Holding back too long, when the moment calls for action, has a cost. Know when to step out.
Without restraint comes sighing and lamenting. No blame falls on others.
Overindulgence leads to regret. Recognizing this early lets you adjust without lasting harm.
Restraint that comes easily. Success.
Moderation that feels natural rather than forced helps things run smoothly.
Sweet restraint brings good fortune. Going forward brings esteem.
A pace or limit you can enjoy and sustain brings good results and respect.
Bitter restraint. Persisting in it brings misfortune, though the regret will pass.
Harsh self-denial kept up for too long can hurt you. Ease the rules so that they can last.
In practice
Love and relationships
Limits in love help when they protect both people and feel shared. If one person is always holding back, talk about what each of you needs.
Work and decisions
Clear schedules and boundaries help a team, but rules that are too rigid can drain it. Set limits you can keep, and review them from time to time.
Money
A budget works best when it is realistic. A plan so strict that it cannot be kept is often abandoned, so choose a limit you can sustain.
How to use this reading
Use this reading when you are deciding how much to hold back, and ask which limit is helping you and which one is wearing you down.
