☴☵ Wind over Water

Dispersal and gathering again.

In the I Ching, Hexagram 59 is dispersion. Wind over water breaks up ice and scatters what was stuck. It favors releasing rigidity, dissolving old divisions and gathering again on a healthier basis. Its image is a temple, a shared center to return to.

The six lines

Read from the bottom line (the beginning) to the top line (the outcome). Each line gives the classical text, our English translation, and a plain-language reading.

Use a strong horse to rescue. Good fortune, and regret fades.

Relying on support early on helps you recover, and regret fades.

Dispersing, you rush to the support you need. Regret fades.

Moving quickly to reach what supports you dissolves regret.

    Dispersing the self. No regret.

Letting go of a rigid self-image frees you from regret.

Dispersing the group brings sublime good fortune. Dispersion gathers at a hill, beyond ordinary thinking.

Breaking up an inward clique brings great good. New gatherings can form around a higher purpose, beyond ordinary expectations.

Like sweat that has left the body, a great proclamation cannot be taken back. The ruler's dwelling is opened up. No blame.

A bold announcement, once made, is hard to take back. Make it with purpose, and there is no blame.

Dispersing the bloodshed and going far away. No blame.
