The six lines

Read from the bottom line (the beginning) to the top line (the outcome). Each line gives the classical text, our English translation, and a plain-language reading.

The wild goose advances toward the shore. The young are in danger; there are words of worry, yet no blame.

You are at the start of a slow journey. Others may doubt you early on, but beginning with care is not a fault.

The wild goose reaches a broad rock, eating and drinking in good cheer. Good fortune.

You are reaching a stable, comfortable stage. Enjoy the modest rewards of steady work.

The wild goose reaches the high plain. The husband goes away and does not return; the wife is pregnant but does not raise a child. Misfortune. It is favorable to defend against robbers.

Moving on without a secure base creates risk. Guard what you have and avoid overextending.

The wild goose reaches a tree and may find a flat branch. No blame.

You may find a secure, if modest, perch. Accept a sensible place to rest and build from there.

The wild goose reaches the hill. The wife is not pregnant for three years, yet in the end nothing can overcome her. Good fortune.

A long wait may feel discouraging, but steady patience keeps the way open. Do not force the timing.

The wild goose reaches the high plain, and its feathers can be used as ceremonial adornment. Good fortune.

A final stage of progress can bring dignity and a good example for others. Good conduct gives your work meaning.

In practice

Love and relationships

Relationships that develop gradually, with each stage honored, tend to hold up better. Let the bond deepen at its natural pace and avoid rushing into big commitments.

Work and decisions

A career or project often moves in stages. Prepare each stage well, earn trust at each level, and resist skipping steps for quick results.

Money

Build wealth gradually, one sound step at a time. Set aside a regular amount and review your plan over months rather than chasing a fast gain.

How to use this reading

Use this reading when a process is moving slowly and you want to know how to pace yourself. Ask: what is the next stage, and what does it need from me?
